Mining for Sustainable Growth and Development in West Africa

Mining ministers of West African countries will discuss their country’s journeys towards achieving their national and the overall Africa vision for mining. Session will focus on sharing knowledge on intervention programmes completed, underway or planned; challenges encountered and approaches applied to resolve them; as well as success stories. It will provide opportunities to promote intra-regional collaboration including sharing ideas, high level solutions and imperatives for success.

Challenges and Prospects

This session will focus on energy minerals and how they can be leveraged for infrastructural development. Highlight various energy minerals in West Africa and their vast industrial uses. Provide example of country-level (Nigeria) yearly spend to bridge power infrastructural gaps over the next 10 years. What is the strategy for implementation? How do energy minerals play into the infrastructural development goal: Coal-to-power strategy, bitumen and steel for construction and lithium for power cells? Issues and challenges with obtaining these minerals.

Success Factors in the Implementation of Country-Level Mining Strategies and Lessons from other jurisdictions

Spotlight on Nigerian Mining sector. This session will review intent, elements and progress on the Roadmap for Growth and Development of the Nigerian Mining Industry launched in 2016 by the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. Ministerial counterparts from other jurisdictions will share their perspectives on the Nigeria Mining Roadmap including experience and challenges in the implementation of similar programme in their countries. It will also discuss new ideas and imperatives to optimize the programmes to realize the Nigeria Mining Roadmap.

This session will examine the issues around ownership, legislation, roles and cooperation of both Federal and State governments in West African countries, and their impact on the realization of the African Mining Vision. It will explore legislation and practical approaches to promote beneficial participation of central and regional governments in growing the mining sector. The session will also be an avenue for the presentation of the African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA) (www.a-mla.org).
