Mining for Sustainable Growth and Development in West Africa

Mining ministers of West African countries will discuss their country’s journeys towards achieving their national and the overall Africa vision for mining. Session will focus on sharing knowledge on intervention programmes completed, underway or planned; challenges encountered and approaches applied to resolve them; as well as success stories. It will provide opportunities to promote intra-regional collaboration including sharing ideas, high level solutions and imperatives for success.

Challenges and Prospects

Access to investments is critical and session will review challenges faced by public and private sector entities in West Africa in attracting financing for mining projects and programmes. It will also discuss investment/financing options available, strategies and requirements to unlock the investments. It will also discuss ideas and high solutions to bridge the gaps in knowledge, capacity and infrastructure between pure financing institutions and mining operators to gaps in structuring financial transactions for mining.

The Roadmap for the Development of the Nigerian Mining Sector:

Success Factors in the Implementation of Country-Level Mining Strategies and Lessons from other jurisdictions

Spotlight on Nigerian Mining sector. This session will review intent, elements and progress on the Roadmap for Growth and Development of the Nigerian Mining Industry launched in 2016 by the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. Ministerial counterparts from other jurisdictions will share their perspectives on the Nigeria Mining Roadmap including experience and challenges in the implementation of similar programme in their countries. It will also discuss new ideas and imperatives to optimize the programmes to realize the Nigeria Mining Roadmap.
